98% of people now-a-days use some sort of social media outlet. With all of the sites available these days it is nearly impossible to not be using some sort of social media.
When marketing on social media you must know who your audience is and pertain to their liking. Use the appropriate social media site for the appropriate audience. If you are looking to recruit high schools students/younger audience then Facebook and Tumblr are ideal. For people such as alumni, LinkdIn or Google+ would be more appropriate. Universities use social media to attract new students, gain more interest of current students, and help alumni stay connected with the university.
Many students don't want to have to search all over the main website to find one thing they are looking for. Therefore you should be able to create different pages for all the different departments. For instance, many college athletic teams have their own social media sites for students/fans that are interested in their schedule, their record or just to know their players. Different clubs and organizations should have their own social media sites as well.
Having links on the main page to help guide the interested audience to every social media page should always be a must. Help make it easy to get to the social media pages. Market your social media pages as well. People use social media to search for Universities just as much as they do through Google. That is a fact you want to remember so STAND OUT and let your information shine!
